I do agree. When you sit down and do the math it really comes close to that, and it is comparable to buying a shirt at $150, but I’m just saying that the prices are contradictory to the whole idea of modernism.

I do not make enough money to be able to justify spending $725 on one chair that is only a side chair and neither does the majority of the world. To me I don’t find $300 unreasonable at all for an Eames Shell, but in no way is that affordable, and to me specifically this chair is harder to find reasonable at $725. When these guys were designing this furniture I don’t think they were expecting it to be high end, I mean most of these designs were for public places. I don’t understand how it is that now these chairs are pretty much only owned by high income people.

I’m not entirely sure the correlation between quality and price is there, when I could just build this myself for literally 1/6th the price, and maybe if I could sew I would feel the same about paying $150 for a shirt.

A bit ironically and a bit because most people don’t have $750 for one chair and that these are still hand crafted and nice, if it was Ikea or some other company profiting off Aalto’s design I’d have a problem. I think it’s alright to help out this guy and his interpretation on it, I’ll probably just make these myself though. Also, I think it’s ridiculous how overpriced modernist furniture is nowadays, especially since the idea behind modernism is for affordability and mass production.
